My Top 3 Career Highlights: Daniel Knight.
Daniel Knight was recently named a finalist in the Residential Surveyor of the Year category for the RICS Matrics Surveyor Awards 2024. After qualifying as a surveyor through Sava in November 2023, Daniel has set up his own successful business, HomeScan. We caught up with him to explore his top 3 career highlights and what it means to him to be named a RICS awards finalist.

- Becoming AssocRICS
Gaining my Associate membership with RICS was a real career highlight. It demonstrates that you’re part of a profession now and qualified to provide an expert service. The AssocRICS designation adds reassurance to my clients that I am part of a body recognised for professionalism. Home surveys are an investment that people often pay for reluctantly, so they need to feel confident in your ability to help them. - Going Independent
Setting up independently has given me the freedom to decide how to provide the best service to my clients. I can choose how much work to take on so that quality never suffers. I can use the templates and technology I want to use and manage my own diary. This allows me some free time to improve as a professional and not just stick with the same level of competency as I would if I was doing more surveys a week. - RICS Recognition
When I was a Sava student, I saw people getting nominated for RICS awards and it looked very impressive. I thought that one day I might be in the running, but I never thought it would be this soon. Being a young person in this profession, it’s easy to consider those who have been doing it for 30 years as “the professionals”, but these awards are testament to all the hard work being put in by the next generation of surveyors.
How does it feel to be a finalist in the RICS Matrics Surveyor Awards 2024?
I have a rule that I should take any opportunity that presents itself. If you don’t try, you’ll never know! I was hopeful but knew I would be up against some real competition, so it was a shock to be named a finalist.
What’s your favourite thing about being a surveyor?
I love not being stuck at my desk all day, but the real rewards are when my expertise saves someone from buying a money pit. Nothing beats the feeling of saving a homebuyer thousands of pounds.
