New Rules Fast-Track EV Chargepoint Installation.

The UK government is significantly streamlining the process for installing electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints, a move set to make EV ownership easier, quicker, and more affordable for drivers across the nation. This proactive step is part of the ongoing “Plan for Change,” aiming to accelerate Britain’s transition to electric vehicles.
Cutting Red Tape for Faster Installation
Effective from 29th May 2025, drivers and businesses will largely be exempt from submitting planning applications to install both public and private EV sockets. This crucial change is designed to reduce bureaucratic hurdles, saving significant time and costs associated with chargepoint deployment. The government anticipates these changes will enable more EV owners with driveways to install private chargepoints at home with greater ease, speed, and affordability.
For social housing providers, the recently announced changes present a significant opportunity to streamline the provision of charging infrastructure for their residents; providers will face considerably less red tape when facilitating or installing chargepoints for tenants with driveways or dedicated parking. This is expected to save months of potential delays, enabling a faster rollout of charging option
Significant Savings and Support for Drivers
For individual drivers, these new measures could unlock savings of up to £1,100 per year compared to the running costs of a petrol or diesel car. This builds on existing government support, which already offers people renting or owning a flat, or those with on-street parking, up to £350 off the cost of installing a home charger.
The government continues its substantial investment in the EV transition, having committed over £2.3 billion to support drivers and back British carmakers. This financial commitment is designed to make the switch to EVs easier, cheaper, and better for everyone.
The Clear Advantages of Electric Vehicles
For those considering the switch, the benefits of EVs are becoming increasingly evident:
- Running an EV can cost as little as 2 pence per mile.
- EVs are becoming more affordable, with two in five used EVs now priced under £20,000.
- Most new EVs offer a range of nearly 300 miles on a single charge.
This streamlined approach to chargepoint installation is warmly welcomed and firmly places the UK on the road to becoming an EV world-leader.
