My Top 3 Career Highlights: Tyson Sheppard.
Tyson was recently named a finalist in the Residential Surveyor of the Year category for the RICS Matrics Surveyor Awards 2024. Tyson’s interest in property was sparked by the desire to bring a family-owned grade II listed building on Tunbridge Wells High Street back into repair following many years of neglect. This compelled him to pursue a career in surveying to learn how this could be achieved. We caught up with him to discover his top 3 career highlights so far and to find out what it means to him to be named an award finalist.
Tyson’s Top 3 Career Highlights
- Becoming Chartered
When I graduated from university, competition was fierce due to the state of the economy. I was fortunate to secure an Assistant Surveyor position with a local private school that had a diverse building portfolio, which served as my entry point into the profession. Ten months later, I joined a firm of Chartered Rural Surveyors, vowing to become Chartered by 25, which I achieved after just two years, becoming the first surveyor at my former firm to complete the RICS Building Surveying pathway. - Becoming a Partner
I’ve had aspirations of working for Bracketts Chartered Surveyors and Estate Agents from a young age, having carried out work experience with them. Becoming a partner at 32 was a huge milestone that reflects my dedication and enables me to contribute to the Bracketts legacy, which dates back almost 200 years. I believe that focusing on supporting and developing the next generation of surveyors is crucial. As a partner, I am excited that Bracketts has recently welcomed a Sava graduate into the team. - Being Shortlisted
I am extremely proud to be a member of the RICS so this recognition is both humbling and exciting. Being part of a firm like Bracketts, where a former partner was also a RICS president, adds to the significance of this honour. The nomination reflects not only my personal achievements but also the collective efforts of my colleagues and mentors who have supported my journey. This recognition inspires me to continue striving for excellence in my role and to encourage others in the field.
How does it feel to be a finalist in the RICS Matrics Surveyor Awards 2024?
It’s a real honour. These awards remind me of the legacy of excellence and leadership within our profession and at my firm, and motivate me to continue upholding those standards in my own work.
What’s your favourite thing about being a surveyor?
Coming from Tunbridge Wells, a town developed in the late Georgian/early Victorian era, being a surveyor allows me to contribute to the care and restoration of some truly beautiful buildings.
