Walls and Floors for Housing Professionals.

This qualification provides knowledge and understanding relating to walls and floors in residential buildings. It covers the different construction of walls and their function as well as how they may deteriorate over time. It also includes common floor construction and their function as well as how they might fail. The qualification explores ground gas, how this may enter the property and how to mitigate any health risks.

  • How walls are constructed and the impact on owners and occupiers if they deteriorate over time, including how defects might appear and introduction of damp proof courses
  • How walls contribute to the energy efficiency of buildings, including the purpose of insulation and how the thermal efficiency of cavity and solid walls can be improved 
  • Common floor construction types, their failures and the implications for owners and occupiers
  • How defects in timber and building materials are caused and how to identify wood boring insects and fungi
  • How floors can contribute to energy efficiency
  • How floor design and construction can impact on ground gases (including radon) and how to mitigate health risks
